Creating a large and open world is not an easy task even for a normal video game, but when it comes to virtual reality and the metaverse, it becomes even more complicated. Sharing this process with you will help you understand how all the development stages must be carefully structured and organized before the final environments are placed in the game.

The creation of each area in the world of Victoria VR starts with a concept that gathers all ideas and puts them together in mood boards, so the vision is clear to every team member. The next stage of this process is called blockout. As the name suggests, it’s a technique that uses simple blocks to design the layout of certain areas. Once the blockout is fully tested regarding the gameplay experience, our level designers and environment artists can move on to the next steps. This includes placing appropriate assets with high-level textures in the area, modeling new assets specific to the area, and polishing all environments to our highest standards.

The design of all things in the world of Victoria VR is carefully prepared according to the teachings of Feng Shui and the 5 elements of nature. The final products must meet both the highest level of graphical detail and a true and accurate representation of each specific element. It is also important that every single asset meets the requirements of our technical team to ensure that the optimization of our game is top-notch and that you, the player, have the best possible experience with the smoothest gameplay imaginable.

The development of such vast worlds with rich environments like the one of Victoria VR is very time-consuming and requires efficient workforce allocation and the use of tools that can speed up the development process. Implementing advanced tools for procedural generation is very important to save much-needed time. Houdini’s generation tools integrate seamlessly with Unreal Engine, which we use to build our game, and allow us to quickly create dynamic content when crafting larger parts of the environment, such as trees, cliffs, or even some buildings. This gives us the opportunity to speed up the whole world-building while bringing some diversity to the environment using procedural generation.

Bringing the world of Victoria VR to life with these stunning environments is something that requires a large investment of time, but in the long run, all the skills gained and tools developed will help us continue to grow and progress.
