The (r)evolution of the spell combat system in Victoria VR
Spells quickly became one of the main combat mechanics in Victoria VR. The combination of feng shui elements and smooth, unique controls promised a very exciting and fresh combat system from the beginning. The current spell system has gone through many iterations with different control schemes, and even the core foundation of the spells has evolved through multiple versions.
We always knew that spells would provide fun and action-packed gameplay. The question was how to create a control scheme that would complement the teachings of Feng Shui. From the very first brainstorming sessions, the initial idea was to simply use a button to cast spells and a circular menu to select which spell the player would cast. This approach is well-established and functional, but that’s the problem. We always prefer unconventional ideas over obvious ones to enhance the VR experience for our players. That’s why we came up with an entirely new system of drawing symbols and performing actual throwing motions to use spells. Each Feng Shui element is represented by various things, including shapes. For example, fire is represented by a triangle, so drawing a triangle will select the fire spell. The player then throws it by holding down the trigger and releasing it while making an actual throwing motion with their hand. With this system, we’ve transformed ordinary and boring button mashing into something that requires real commitment and tactics, truly drawing the player into the action and turning virtual reality into reality.
The current version of casting spells is very intense and well-suited for our single-player content within the Early Access of Asugea. However, for the release of PVP Arenas for Oculus Quest 2 and 3, we decided to simplify the drawing part. This helps us maintain a fully immersive experience while adapting to the fast-paced multiplayer battles. The symbols for the elements have been replaced by simplified shapes so that the system is maintained, but players are not overly constrained by the time-consuming drawing of symbols. This is crucial because competition with other players is much more intense, requiring decisions in seconds, sometimes even less.
We understand that in order to provide the perfect immersive experience, we need to continually improve our systems, keep up with the latest technology trends, and stay one step ahead of the competition. That’s why we’re more than confident that our spellcasting system will continue to evolve and iterate with more updates to fully adapt to the situation and the part of the Victoria VR universe it resides in.
